Review: Irma Vep - Season 1, Episode 7 (Finale)

A rare miss-step for HBO. We're at the end of this series, and “The Terrible Wedding” asks.. was any of it really necessary?

The series finale sees Mira’s star rising. She says goodbye to Irma Vep, bonds with Rene and receives an offer to star in what is sure to be an award-winning movie. There’s so much going on in the background that even the show seems to be unsure what exactly its purpose is. Mira’s journey? Her randomly walking through walls? Okay then.

Kristen Stewart’s cameo was the highlight of the show, which is not a good thing. Her character didn’t contribute anything to the plot, she was just.. there? And yet it was the most exciting part of the episode.

It’s disappointing to me that this series started out strong and then each character’s threads slowly disintegrated with barely any conclusions. What happened to Zoe? Regina? Laurie? Eamonn? These characters weren’t fleshed out at all. Mira was very interested in women in at the start of the show, and yet in this finale she tells Zoe she isn’t sure she’s attracted to woman at all. Again, what exactly was the point of this?

Rene lies to himself by talking about how much better he’s doing, which anyone with eyes can tell is not true. I was really looking forward to a show that highlighted a love of classic filmmaking, but what we got was a mess of a show that wasn’t sure what it really wanted to be. Sad, as it’s a waste of opportunity and talent.
