Review: What We Do In The Shadows - Season 4, Episode 1+2

“Reunited” and “The Lamp” are a constantly hilarious open to the season, full of solid performances from the main cast and sharp one-liners. Our core four are back together, and that’s when the comedy shines the most.

A major change this season is Nadja, Nandor, Guillermo and Laszlo now parenting baby Colin Robinson, who is far more fun than adult Colin Robertson ever was. Laszlo decides to take a special interest in parenting him, and it introduces a fun new storyline to the show. The writers have naturally reduced Mark Proksch’s dialogue, but he continues to infuse little Colin Robinson with his facial expressions and energy.

I consider this comedy to still be a hidden gem as I don’t see it talked about as much as it deserves to be. The cast individually nail their roles while the group conversations make for the most chaos. I’ve seen a lot of character growth in Laszlo heading into Season 4, and it shows in these first two episodes as we discover more of his personality. He began the series as the aloof member of the group, but he’s really come out of his shell.

Nandor and Guillermo’s codependent relationship evolves to deal with romantic feelings. Nandor is scared by these feelings, so decides to distract himself by marrying one of his 37 dead wives. Guillermo is naturally ordered to be Nandor’s best man. I have a feeling this will explode later in the season and some confessions will be made.

Guillermo decides to move on, pretending he does not care about Nandor marrying an ex – but it’s obvious his feelings are a little hurt. Marwa is introduced to the fold as Nandor’s chosen wife. The two don’t have much in common, but Nandor’s desperation to avoid his feelings for Guillermo forces him into continuing down this path.

Nadja throws herself into her new project: a Vampire nightclub! I can see this being a great plotline this season, as it will give the group an opportunity to interact more with their own kind. Guest stars would also be a great addition as club guests. I’d also be interested to know what happened during Nadja’s year in London for her to decide on the club.

Watching the group try to parent an active kid is going to be great fun. I’m so happy these vamps are back on our screens, and I’m excited to see where this season takes them.
