Review: Ghosts - Season 2, Episode 1

Season 2 begins with a twist, but not the one I expected. At the end of Season 1, Sam and Jay fell through the floor just as they were about to welcome their first B&B guests – and a season 2 promo clip lead us to think he may have gained the ability to see the ghosts of the house, just like Sam.

This would’ve been a great storyline for Jay as he currently can only talk to Sam and the B&B guests, whereas Sam gets to interact with every ghost in the house. For a moment, Jay thinks he can see his ghost friend Pete – but it turns out it was just a delivery guy who looked like Pete. Aw, disappointed.

After the first guests left a scathing one star review over the whole “our hosts fell through the floor” incident, Sam is feeling the pressure to make sure their new guests have a perfect stay. She rounds up the ghosts and informs them they must all be on their best behavior, much to their chagrin. Rebecca Wisocky is a stand out in the cast, and her character Hetty is one of my favorites for her zingers.

Unfortunately for Sam, her new guests nitpick EVERYTHING. They’re nice to Sam’s face, but the ghosts inform Sam of what Tom and Debbie really think of her. After Sam and Jay find the Yelp profile of their guests, they find out the couple constantly give one-star reviews. Sam suggests letting the ghosts spy on them, but Jay isn’t a fan of the idea. The ghosts and Sam promptly form a plan without Jay to try and make Tom and Debbie’s stay a five-star one.

The B-plot of the week surrounds Thorfin, Nigel and Isaac. Nigel is unhappy about Thorfin’s loud demeanor and Isaac tries to keep his boyfriend happy by asking Thorfin to tone it down. Poor Thor doesn’t take the news that he’s “a little much” and disappears to the basement to sulk. This upsets the basement ghosts, who come upstairs to complain that Thor is bumming them out. Isaac and Nigel apologize to Thor, and all is well in the ghost world again. Thor is also one of my favorites in the show, I love his little analogies and stories.

Tom and Debbie continue to lie to Sam when she asks if everything is okay. The ghosts inform Sam they hate everything, and Sam spins out as her people-pleasing nature tries to keep the guests happy. I love the comedy here as Sam tries to relay information from the ghosts to Jay without making it clear it’s the ghosts providing the information. After Jay loses it at Tom and Debbie, Sam tells the couple their Yelp reviews are not as private as they thought they were. Despite the confrontation and complaints, all ends well with a five star Yelp review.

Having B&B guests provides a great opportunity for guest stars and will keep the plotlines fresh. This episode sets the show up well for season 2, and I look forward to seeing the relationships between the ghosts develop and grow more this season.
