This week on 1923: Currently, Teonna remains in North Dakota, Spencer is only halfway to France, and Jacob and Cara are trying to gather an army, making it unlikely that the main characters will meet before the end of the season. It's unclear if the slow pace of the first season will build up to the highly anticipated and potentially deadly range war that has been hinted at since the first episode.
Once Hank's son has eaten and slept, they will send him to find Teonna's father. They burned everything from the school, but Hank was unsure if they should burn the bible. He spent time in prison where they read the prisoners a passage from it every day. Out of fear of God's wrath, they decide to bury the bible instead.
The police have a warrant for Teonna's arrest, and they burst into her grandmothers cabin with a warrant. One of them carelessly pushes the old woman to the ground. The story he tells his partner is accurate: she did attack him before hitting her head on the stove. But she was also an elderly woman who posed no real danger. Assholes.
At the Yellowstone ranch, Jacob continues to make a remarkable recovery, and by the end of the episode, he is walking around unassisted. Encouraged by the news of Spencer's return, he instructs Zane to quietly gather a group to get revenge on Banner. Cara is having a difficult time filling the 20 livestock agent positions that she and the sheriff have been interviewing for, as some applicants are offended by a woman asking questions of a man. The job is dangerous, requiring men to leave their families for low pay and long hours. After many interviews, they manage to find just three suitable candidates.
Cara decides to break her promise to Jacob in order to prevent him from becoming a vigilante and risking his own life again. She seeks the help of the law to bring down Banner, who is threatening the Yellowstone's water supply with his mining operations. The sheriff comes to the ranch to gather evidence and promises to arrest Banner the next day. Cara believes that this is the difference between seeking justice and taking revenge. When Jacob coldly turns away from her, she reminds him of all she did to keep him alive during his recovery and argues that he is not the only one who has suffered over the past few months. Helen Mirren is brilliant in this scene.
The only person who may be able to stop Jacob begins the episode lost at sea, but Spencer and Alex are able to survive on an upturned boat. They are in a similar situation as in the past when they were fighting off lions and hoping for a miracle rescue. In the middle of the night, a passing ocean liner spots them and sends a rescue boat. However, there remains the issue of Alex's foreign citizenship, which Spencer asks the captain to resolve by conducting a wedding ceremony at sea. The captain agrees and even offers them rings from a box he's gathered from the bodies of sailors with no known next of kin. When Alex can't find a ring small enough, the captain offers her his wife's, which he wears as a good luck charm when he's at sea. It fits perfectly.
Later that night, Spencer tells Alex the ranch doesn't have modern amenities like electricity or running water - and she realises life is going to be much different there. When she asks Spencer about his aspirations, he confesses that he doesn't have any. In response, she reminds him of their vows to always be honest with each other. Spencer then tells her that everything they've been through has made him realize that he should return Alex to her previous life, but he's too selfish to do so. Alex declares that she's willing to follow him to the ends of the earth. While these two are perfect for each other, they no doubt have more challenges ahead.
