Recap: Dear Edward - Season 1, Episode 6

This week, Dee Dee continues to struggle through a mountain of legal and financial paperwork, trying to make sense of it all. She snaps, picks up a hammer and whacks some holes into the walls as an anger management technique. Not sure it’s quite working for her.

Edward and Shay show up at the spot Mahira gave them, but she’s late and Edward is nervous. When she finally arrives, Edward tries to be cool when Mahira wants to sneak into the museum but he’s jittery. Shay says it’s fine, they’ll do it. They follow Mahira’s lead and slip past the ticket guy and up the stairs.

Adriana, Kojo and Becks walk to Becks’ school, reciting lines from Jack and the Giant Beanstalk. Becks asks Adriana to come see her costume for a school event, and she promises she wouldn’t miss it for anything despite being busy with the campaign.

Dee Dee gets quite a fright when she shows up to group with cupcakes to find Steve asleep on the floor of the group therapy room. He’s very hungover and somehow has a black eye. She helps clean him up and covers his black eye as he tells her he got into a bar fight. He couldn’t face his fiancĂ©e (after cheating on Daphne with Amanda) and felt he deserved a punch in the face. His phone constantly pings with texts from Daphne wondering where he is. Steve accidentally pukes on Dee Dee’s jacket, but she’s not worried as it was last seasons anyway.

Shay asks Mahira point blank why she came to the supermarket and gave Edward the shrunken head. Mahira apologizes for freaking him out, she was confused. Shay does not accept that explanation. Mahira takes Edward to see some locks and Mahira confirms Jordan was her boyfriend and they would come to the museum all the time, it’s where they had their first kiss, their first argument. Mahira explains it had to be a secret as her Uncle doesn’t let her date, though Edward struggles with not being trusted to keep the secret. Jordan needed his own life, as he shared everything with Edward. This was the one thing he had for himself.

Mahira says she explained a lot in the letter – that Edward never got. Shay begins to get a little jealous and tells Edward she’ll meet him in the gift shop, leaving him with Mahira. She asks what the final day was like and Edward has flashbacks. He’s unable to verbalize his feelings of that day, so he tells Mahira he blacked out and only remembers waking up in the hospital. Edward later finds Shay, who then storms off after being excluded from the talk with Mahira. Edward apologizes and asks Shay for advice on what to do with Mahira. She promptly calls him an asshole and takes off toward home.

Linda struggles with her job giving her fewer and fewer shifts now that she is visibly pregnant, meaning she’s going to have to tell her roommates she can’t make rent. She’s now six months pregnant, and worries about losing her job completely. Lacey approaches her after group and offers her the baby stuff she has at the house.

Adriana’s chief of staff plans a fundraiser appointment for the same time as Becks’ school play, much to Adriana’s disappointment. Kojo worries Adriana is getting too close to Becks. She just lost her mother, and is now getting attached to Adriana – whose life is about to get busier and busier. Kojo is simply looking out for Becks’ best interests when he tells Adriana that maybe they shouldn’t be around her so much anymore.

Dee Dee takes Zoe shopping for backpacking supplies and tries to talk her out of an $700 sleeping bag. The phrase “tighten our budget” is not in Zoe’s vocabulary. Zoe gets defensive when Dee Dee calls her out on just wanting to run away after Charles’ death. Dee Dee still wants Zoe to stay in school, but has agreed to support her no matter her choice.

Amanda receives a text from Daphne confirming their dinner for Saturday – which is going to be especially awkward as she just slept with Steve, who is surprised Amanda actually showed up. She calls him out for ghosting her and he worries Amanda is going to let their indiscretion slip. The three share a meal and make it through unscathed, with the exception of Steve’s glaringly obvious black eye. Daphne says Steve wanted to heal things with Brent more than anything, which annoys Amanda. She tells Daphne that Brent went to Steve and begged his forgiveness and Steve said no. Daphne is surprised to hear this, and is mad at Steve for not telling her about it. Steve and Amanda yell, and she storms out.

This episode features Sam a little more. Sam lost his friend Ben in the crash, and attends group but doesn’t talk much. While checking on Ben’s storage locker he meets Vernon, another friend of Ben’s. The two agree to communicate over decisions about the locker, but Vernon tells Sam he’s also there if Sam ever needs to talk about Ben. Sam googles Vernon, who is a bartender.

Shay and Edward are curled up in their beds at Shay’s house, but neither are asleep. Shay is still mad that Edward left her to spend time with Mahira for 72 minutes. He didn’t realize it was that long, and Shay reminds him she was the one who did the detective work to find Mahira. Edward says Mahira is the most important person in the world to him right now as she knew Jordan, which hurts Shay even more. Edward says she’s important too, but she refuses to speak to him and goes to sleep.

The next morning, Edward asks if he’s gotten any mail as his friend sent him a letter. Lacey, who has been hiding all of the weird letters Edward has been sent by the public, says not that she can think of but she’ll ask John. He hears a knock at the door and comes face to face with Linda, who is surprised to see Edward. She tells him her boyfriend was on the plane too. Lacey invites her in and shows her the baby stuff in the garage and tells Linda she tried to get pregnant, but it didn’t work, out. Linda then realizes telling the group that she got pregnant without even trying may have made Lacey feel bad, and apologizes. But Lacey seems to be doing better now that Edward is living with them, and letting her baby things go reflects that.

Adriana shows up to the designated fundraiser in a beautiful gown with her staffer by her side. She’s a great people person and has many conversations with people, but Eric finds her sitting at the bar alone. It seems he didn’t really get the “not interested” message. He asks if Kojo is present. She says Eric’s always had her back, and Eric says he wants to be there for her. Meanwhile, Kojo is backstage with Becks at the school play. Becks asks where Adriana is, but Kojo gently tells her he’s not sure she’s here as she’s very busy. Becks refuses to go on without Adriana, and luckily: Adriana shows up.

Sam shows up to the gay club where Vernon works. Vernon teases him about stalking him on Instagram, and Sam clarifies he just came to talk to Vernon about the timing of shutting down the storage locker. Something that could’ve easy been done via phone. Sam says he’s never been there before, but Vernon says these places tend to grow on you. The two both admit they didn’t know Ben super well, but Sam admits he saw Ben 3 days before he died, which is why he’s struggling with this a little more than he thought he would.

John arrives home to Lacey, Edward and Linda having a great time telling stories over dinner. Linda tells him she’s from group, and John says welcome. Edward thanks John for the pictures, and John tells Linda he went to the crash site, felt the energy in the field and she goes quiet. She asks why he went, and Edward explains he went to take pictures of it to show it wasn’t still on fire, to quell Edward’s nightmares. Kinda brought the vibe down a bit. Linda tells Lacey about her trip to Gary’s parents, when Lacey gets a call from Sam.

Sam is panicking at the bar because he thinks Vernon is flirting with him and he’s tipsy and worried about blowing up his life. Lacey manages to calm him down as Sam admits Ben was more than just a friend even though not much happened between them.

Steve dry-cleaned Dee Dee’s jacket and drops it over to her house. Standing on the doorstep at night, he admits to Dee Dee he abandoned Brent. He was an addict and when he came to Steve to heal, he rejected him. Also, he had sex with Amanda. Dee Dee absorbs all this fairly well and invites Steve in, sensing he needs someone to talk to. He sees the hammer holes in the walls but doesn’t ask questions.

Lacey tells John that Edward asked about the letters. John maintains they should’ve been straight with Edward and asks how long Linda will be staying with them. A while, Lacey says. John is unhappy she didn’t ask him first. Lacey and John argue about John going to Colorado, though it did help Edward. John points out he’s grieving too, and sometimes Lacey doesn’t think about that. He says there’s no space for him there, and takes off to check on things at work.

Adriana asks Kojo if they can talk about their relationship. She realizes he is protective of Becks, but she wants to be there for Becks too while they’re still in New York. Kojo tells Adriana that Eric put a rush on Becks’ passport, which has now arrived quicker than they expected. Adriana asks when they’re leaving, but all Kojo says is soon. She asks if they have to, and Kojo confirms they do. His family need him, his business needs him. Becks needs to be surrounded by family. Kojo thanks Adriana for her kindness, and says he will miss her. The two finally kiss.

Edward gets a late night snack and finds Linda in the kitchen, unable to sleep either. She shows Edward a photo of Gary and asks if Edward saw him on the flight. Edward does, but again can’t verbalize his feelings and hates seeing memories of the crash. Linda acknowledges it’s unfair of her to ask and apologizes – then Edward says he remembers seeing Gary at the back of the plane when they were both stretching their legs.

Later, Edward talks to Mahira on the phone. She confirms the family was running late that morning because Jordan was with her, saying goodbye. Edward tells her everything that happened that day, as she asked in the museum. The family sitting at the back while his mom sat up front. What it was like when the plane landed. Waking up at the crash site. Finding out his family was gone. Edward misses Jordan more than anyone else, as his brother was his hero.
