Recap: The Blacklist - Season 10, Episode 4

Following the death of their well-known financial backer/father Warren Bostwick, his estranged daughters were left with a perplexing scavenger hunt of clues to decipher in order to locate their family's fortune. Unfortunately, the triplets' strained relationship prevents them from solving the clues, resulting in the inheritance going unclaimed. This dilemma caught the attention of the latest Blacklister, known as the Hyena.

At the start of the episode, Red appeared unexpectedly at Cooper's house, prompting Cooper to wonder if Red was homeless. Red has been frequently on the move this season, likely due to the numerous vengeful Blacklisters pursuing him, who may be aware that he is an FBI informant. Meanwhile, Robert Vesco, a returning Blacklister whom Red helped escape from jail in the previous episode ("The Four Guns"), has no knowledge that Red played a role in his apprehension.

Vesco had betrayed Red during Season 6 of The Blacklist, following a cross-country treasure hunt in which the two old friends participated, and Vesco had stolen the money and fled. In Season 9 of The Blacklist, Vesco's illicit dealings led the Task Force to finally detain him. Despite being Red's former mentor and close friend, Red decided to break him out of prison. Vesco was instantly suspicious of Red's motives, but as soon as Red updates Cooper on his latest findings, the reason becomes clear.

The Hyena is infamous for targeting vulnerable families and murdering heirs to acquire their fortunes. Red becomes aware of the Hyena's modus operandi after the Bostwick family lawyer dies in a restaurant bathroom under suspicious circumstances. The Bostwick family's wealth has remained unclaimed, as the triplets who inherited it were unable to decipher the clues left by their late father. Red warns Cooper that the triplets' lives are at risk, and the Task Force must track down and apprehend the Hyena.

In Raymond Reddington's world, he always has a hidden agenda. In this case, he is as interested in the Bostwick family fortune as the Hyena. Red believes he and Vesco can solve the puzzle, as they have a history of finding treasure together. This is why Red helped Vesco escape from jail. While Cooper informs the Task Force about the Hyena, Red shares the details of the clues with Vesco. In doing so, Red manipulates the Task Force into eliminating his competition for the Bostwick family fortune.

The Bostwick triplets believe they will never find their father's liquidated assets. Each sister has a distinct riddle to solve, but none of them are willing to collaborate, as their father predicted before his death. Things worsen when Kendall, one of the triplets, is killed shortly after the Task Force warns her about the Hyena, confirming Red's suspicions that the Blacklister is on the hunt.

As Vesco and Red continue to decipher the clues, the Task Force works to protect Alex and Cordelia from harm. However, as they uncover more clues, a sinister plot emerges. When the Task Force finally reaches Alex, they discover that she has been taken, not just by the Hyena but also by Cordelia, who has been working with him the whole time.

It turns out Cordelia is a red herring, and she kills the Hyena right after obtaining Alex's clue, promising to reunite with her sister once she finds the final clue at their father's gravesite. Meanwhile, Red and Vesco arrive at the gravesite to find Cordelia vandalizing her father's epitaph. However, Red informs Cordelia that she has misunderstood the clue, which actually leads to their mother's grave. Cordelia's role in her sister's abduction and murder is revealed, and Red shoots her in the foot before calling in the Task Force to arrest her.

Red and Vesco successfully solve the scavenger hunt and acquire the Bostwick family fortune, which they choose to split with Alex, the only surviving daughter. They discover a recording from their father congratulating them on their success and telling his daughters that they deserve everything they got.

Red reflects on the tragic tale, acknowledging that it brought them together as friends. However, Vesco, being a notorious conman, remains cautious and waits for the other shoe to drop. Red assures Vesco that there is no hidden agenda and confirms his intentions when he meets Cooper later. Cooper, who understands how Red operates, considers Red's request to drop the investigation into Vesco's prison break. Red reaffirms his friendship with Vesco and states that their days of betrayal are behind them.

Despite Red's words, the scene cuts to a dark parking lot where Vesco meets a mysterious man, who is revealed to be an associate of Blacklister Wujing.

The man introduces himself as a representative of Mr. Wujing and reveals that Vesco's information was given to them by Marvin Gerard, Red's late attorney. Gerard exposed Red's identity as an FBI informant to Wujing and orchestrated Vesco's arrest by the FBI. The man further reveals that Vesco walked right into Red's trap, which was not a stroke of bad luck.

Vesco questions Red's motive behind this, and the man provides him with a card, instructing him to call a number when he's ready to learn more. He also adds that Mr. Wujing is interested in discussing their shared interests.

Vesco was once on the verge of becoming Red's ally, but learning that he was involved in his arrest may shatter their budding relationship. Will Vesco remain loyal to Red or join the ranks of those seeking revenge against him?
