Dee Dee sets up for the final grief group session party and decides to raid the church decorations, amusing the Minister when she asks for something “less Catholic” – though he is less amused when Dee Dee repeatly says “fuck” in the church. The young Minister offers to help Dee Dee spiritually, should she want it, but all she wants is to rope him into helping her set up for the party. He agrees to help, and Dee Dee happily tells him he’s restoring her faith in the church.
John returns the next morning to his office/apartment to find Edward’s letters all over the place, and Edward gone. He calls Lacey, who shows up and sees all the letters opened. Edward must’ve read every single one. She yells at John for leaving Edward alone in a strange place for the night, and gets even more mad when John says Edward seemed okay – after he pushed a piano down the stairs and got expelled yesterday.
Lacey arrives home and asks Shay if she’s heard from Edward, but she hasn’t. Lacey checks the house, but Edward hasn’t come home. Shay thinks it’s her fault for pushing Edward away, but Lacey says it isn’t. She asks Shay if she has any idea where Edward might be, and Shay tells her about Mahira. Edward, sure enough, has run away to the museum. It’s become an odd place of comfort for him.
Steve and Amanda talk about what they did after college. She gets Steve to dance with her to some musicians playing by the water. He admits he’s falling in love with her and he’s going to break up with Daphne. He’s never felt this way before, and feels he and Amanda should be together. Amanda is hesitant, with Brent always hanging over them. It’s weird. He’s engaged. She likes him, but she just thinks Steve is way for her to feel closer to Brent. It’s not the basis of a healthy relationship, so Amanda says this is it for them.
Lacey finds Mahira at her Uncle’s store, where Shay told her she worked. She asks Mahira if she’s heard from Edward, but she hasn’t. Lacey asks if she knows where he would be, and Mahira tells her about the museum. Lacey commiserates with Mahira over their loss of Jordan, and Mahira tearfully tells her she doesn’t know when it’s going to stop hurting. The two share a hug.
Edward is tucked up in the museum, crying. The ticket guy finds him and asks if he’s okay, and he runs out. He asks random people on the street if he can use their phones, but they all ignore him. He has a vision of Jordan, telling Edward to follow him. The boys go through some trees and Edward tells Jordan he doesn’t want to be here anymore, he wants to be with his family.
Adriana places her vote at the polls, muttering “Here goes nothing, Grandma” as she does so. Later, at her office the news announces she’s close to taking the lead in the voting over Cora, her closest opponent.
Dee Dee tells the Minister all about grief group and the people in it as they decorate the room. She’s a little worried about the turnout as Linda just had her baby and Adriana’s election is today. It’s been 3 months, and Dee Dee is unhappy the airline won’t pay for more sessions. She thinks the grief group members need her a lot more than she needs them, which isn’t true – but it gives her a purpose. The Minister gently talks her through her feelings. Dee Dee worries that if she disappeared, no one would even notice now.
Edward walks out of the trees alone and approaches his old home. He sneaks inside the building when a door is left open, and knocks at the door of his old apartment but no one is home. He retrieves the spare key they family hid months ago and lets himself in to find a new family lives there now. He dreams his family still lives there, and his reverie is broken when the dog belonging to the new family barks at him.
The new family have a piano, and Edward slips headphones on and sits down to play. The new occupants are surprised to find him there when they come home, but they recognize him. The family let Edward play for them, and seem to genuinely enjoy his company as he gives their young daughter some tips. He shows them the hidden candy spot in the apartment, and gives them the spare key he used to get in.
Meanwhile, Lacey finds the ticket guy at the museum, who confirms Edward was there but took off. She soon realizes Edward went to his old home, and arrives there to pick him up. Before they go home, they go to the old falafel truck to tell the nice man what happened to his family, as the man didn’t realize Edward’s family was in the crash. The man is devastated to hear Jordan and their parents are dead, but understands why Edward struggled to tell him.
One last stop before they go home: The grief group party. Dee Dee is surprised to see Zoe show up, and happily introduces her to the Minister and Milo when Steve arrives too with the promised dumplings. Sam shows up too, despite not returning Dee Dee’s text. Adriana makes it too, even though it’s a crazy day for her. Lacey then brings Edward to meet the group.
Sam tells Lacey he’s choosing Sienna when she asks him about Vernon. Dee Dee points everyone out to Zoe, and she hilariously points out how Sam’s story echoes Charles’ by having a wife and a daughter but also having feelings for man. Everyone has come so far throughout their 3 months of grief group, friendships have been formed and the party is a fitting end to the meetings. Everyone shares Steve’s dumplings in honor of Brent.
Sam goes home and tells Sienna he loves her and Gina, his daughter. He loves his family, and reassures her she’s still the one, his person. But Sienna is convinced she will hold Sam back, so she’s leaving him. He’s scared of losing his family, but she promises that they’ll make it work for Gina.
John is sitting outside when Lacey and Edward arrive home after the big adventure. Lacey jokes about having a tracking chip implanted on Edward. John tells Lacey all the little things he’s noticed about her over the years – more than she thought he did. He admires the way Lacey has cared for Edward, and how far Edward has come.
Adriana wins the election. She does a beautiful speech, thanking her grandma along the way. She also thanks Kojo, who is watching via livestream from Ghana. She tells the audience what he said to convince her to run that day: Sometimes we don’t choose our path, sometimes our path chooses us. He has some pizza in her honor. Adriana is fired up and ready to serve her community, like she was born for this.
Dee Dee and Zoe clean up a bit after the party and discuss how they’re going to deal with their debt. Dee Dee says she’s going to get a job, and Zoe is going to finish school. The two share a drink as Zoe asks to be spoken to like an adult, not a child. Dee Dee floats the idea of a move to Los Angeles.
Edward talks to Shay, who scolds him for running off. He gives her the band aid tin he retrieved from a hidden spot in his old apartment. Inside it is some little mementos from his life in the city, and he wants Shay to have them because she helped him adjust to his new life after the crash, and made him want to stay. He tells her about the letters Lacey and John were hiding from him, and considers writing some people back. Shay wants to read every single one, so the two of them head inside to go through them.
10 weeks later, Adriana is sworn in. Kojo and Becks watch via livestream from Ghana. Steve and Daphne get married. Amanda plays piano. Dee Dee and Zoe decorate their new place and Dee Dee has discovered she’s a natural at real estate. Lacey, Shay, Edward, Linda and the baby have family dinners. Shay finds a letter from someone claiming to be Edward’s uncle, but to his knowledge Edward doesn’t have another uncle. A little mystery for Edward to follow up on, should the show get a second season.
