Recap: Dear Edward - Season 1, Episode 7

Edward is curled up on Shay’s floor once more, only this time he’s texting Mahira. The two discuss what they want to be when they’re older – Edward wants to be a rock star, Mahira wants to be a novelist. Edward asks what she’d like to write about. A tragic love story, perhaps. Edward realizes Mahira probably has photos of Jordan that he has never seen, so he asks her to send him one, but she has to go to bed. Maybe later, she promises. The two continue the “goodnight stupid” joke, when Shay catches him texting. She then tells Edward he has to go home, clearly jealous of Edward’s friendship with Shay.

Adriana and Kojo are happy in their morning after. She googled the way to say “good morning” in Twi, which greatly amuses Kojo. He wants Adriana to stay in bed with him all day, but she has a full day of events planned. Kojo tells her he’s going to grief group today, to tell them he’s leaving. It’s time for him and Becks to go home to Ghana. Adriana is sad to see them go, as she has grown to love having them in her house. Linda now lives with Edward, Lacey and John. Lacey has gotten Linda a job in the machine shop, and while having breakfast Edward learns the Xavier, Shay’s dad, has returned. Lacey explains that every so often Xavier comes and stays for a bit, then leaves again. Edward asks what he’s like, and John answers honestly: Xavier is kind of a dick.

John and Lacey have a scheduling clash, as John was meant to be home for dinner with Edward that night but he’s covering a shift for a friend. Linda offers to skip group and care for Edward, but John promises he’ll take Edward to work with him and the two will get pizza instead. John is not entirely comfortable with Linda living with them yet.

Dee Dee serves up refreshments to Steve, who is somehow still in her house the following morning. She’s put him to work, sorting through the accounts that she couldn’t understand. He asks if she’s sold the Los Angeles condo yet, but she took it off the market. Steve tries to give her a reality check: She can’t keep living this lavish lifestyle. He brings up the main house, and Dee Dee simply laughs.

When the doorbell rings, Dee Dee finds a delivery man who hands her an bottle of champagne – engraved for hers and Charles 25th anniversary. Charles must have ordered it a while ago, and it showing up now must hurt. Today would have been their anniversary, but all she can do is release her anger by bashing more holes in the wall with a hammer as Steve watches on. She tells Steve she raised Zoe in this house (and she clearly isn’t willing to give it up) so they’ll have to make another plan.

Edward times Shay as she works through her roller derby tryout routine. The pair try to come up with a cool roller derby name like “Shay the Slayer” while Edward tentatively broaches the subject of Xavier. Shay remains defensive, and considers it normal for Xavier to come and stay for a while then leave again. Shay says he travels a lot for work but is happy he’s here for her tryout. Mahira sends a photo of herself with Jordan, and Edward takes off.

A news channel has found footage of Adriana’s valedictorian speech and dubbed it “radical” as she asks for affordable housing and healthcare for all. Natalie, her chief of staff, is unhappy she didn’t know about it and labels it socialism. Adriana stands by her speech. Natalie worries they’re alienating their voter base. The election is in two weeks.

Edward stares at the photo of Mahira and Jordan, before zooming in on Mahira and saving the cropped image. He has a vision of Jordan calling him out for doing so, and defends his actions by saying Jordan isn’t in the picture anymore. Edward seems to be getting a little crush on Mahira, as she makes him feel closer to Jordan.

Amanda visits Steve at his office and apologizes for the ambush. She feels bad Steve hasn’t been coming to group and dealing with his grief over Brent in a healthy way, and she understands what Brent said when he told her Steve would run away when shit got real. The two seem to be drawn together again and again, trying to heal but just causing each other more damage.

Sam cleared out Ben’s storage unit and took stuff to Goodwill, but couldn’t bring himself to leave Ben’s things there in case they just got thrown away. He feels stuck, and Lacey sympathizes by telling him her garage is still full of Jane’s stuff. Linda jokingly suggests a garage sale, and Dee Dee says she’s opposed to garage sales on principle. It’s nice to see the group laughing and joking for once. Dee Dee says she’ll even do it – if Kojo stays. Not wanting to get roped in to helping at multiple garage sales, he reiterates he’s off home to Ghana.

Zoe arrives home and sees the engraved bottle of champagne – and the many hammer holes in the wall. She heads upstairs to find Dee Dee going through Charles’ things to sell, and Zoe is entirely unhelpful by telling Dee Dee she’s going to Barcelona tomorrow as the tickets were cheap. Dee Dee tells Zoe she needs her around right now as the two are still going through a really hard time, but Zoe is set on leaving.

Sam heads back to the club where Vernon works. He tells him he cleaned Ben’s things out of the unit, but noticed Vernon’s things are still there. He wants to close out the unit and be done. Vernon asks what Sam plans to do with Ben’s things, and Sam tells him about the garage sale plan – he will donate the proceeds to a non-profit that supports veterans. Vernon is supportive. They do a shot for Ben.

Adriana watches as her opponent trashes her on the news. Kojo says the news people in America are very horrible. He asks Adriana what she intends to do, and she replies: Run away. Later, Adriana, Kojo and Becks head out of the city for a little break. The trio go hiking on the trails and skip rocks on a lake.

Lacey, John, Linda, Sam, his wife Sienna, Amanda and Steve get the first garage sale ready. Amanda asks what Steve is doing there, but doesn’t give him too much grief. He spots a book of Brent’s and it reminds him of the road trips they used to plan as kids. Dee Dee shows up with the bottle of champagne, and it’s the first time she’s met John. Despite her hatred of garage sales, she supports the group and contributes some items. Sam introduces Dee Dee to his wife Sienna, and they’re brought their daughter along too. She hands them the champagne bottle, intending to give it to them when Sam points out it’s worth $3,500. In true Dee Dee fashion, she then takes it back and promises to give them something else.

Edward heads into the city alone, on the bus to see Mahira. It’s unlikely that Lacey is aware of his little trip. Mahira is wary when he shows up to the store as her Uncle is right there. He leaves her a note, telling her his new dream job is a book publisher and to let him know when her novel is done.

John tells Amanda, Edward and Dee Dee what visiting the field in Colorado was like. It’s a little much for Dee Dee, and Lacey pulls him aside to tell him off for talking about Colorado and points out Dee Dee is crying. Group therapy garage sale is not the time or place to tell everyone how great his trip to Colorado was.

Edward goes to the roller derby auditions to support Shay. Xavier calls him miracle boy and summons him to sit next to him up in the stands. It’s a tough audition as many hit the ground. The pair watch Shay’s run. She does really well, and Edward happily tells Xavier how hard Shay had been working on her moves for weeks. Xavier doesn’t understand roller derby, and says Shay needs to think about the long-term trajectory of her decisions. He says colleges love and are willing to give scholarships to golfers – meaning he doesn’t know Shay at all if he thinks she’d be happy playing golf. Xavier brings up Edward sneaking into Shay’s room at night, and Edward says they’re just friends.

Adriana tells Kojo she was five years old when her grandmother first brought her up to this mountain inn. She comes up here when she needs to think, because the mountain air feels clearer. She seems so much happier with Kojo and Becks, but her phone constantly buzzes. Kojo tells her they have mountains in Ghana, and suggests if she’s going to run away to the mountains then it might as well be his mountains. The pair crack jokes and seem so much at home right there.

Sam is surprised when Vernon shows up to the garage sale and tells him he can’t be there. Before he can get Vernon out of there, Sienna approaches to say hi and Sam is forced to introduce her to Vernon, who is clearly surprised that Sam has a wife but doesn’t let this show to Sienna. Sam is embarrassed, having 2 sections of his life meet that he was desperate to keep separated. Vernon says he didn’t come there to mess with things, and just wanted to do a nice thing by contributing. He leaves quietly.

Steve keeps Brent’s road map book and finds a note in the pages. He has a flashback to when Brent came to see him. Brent brought him soup dumplings as a peace offering, and despite Brent being sober for eighteen months and sixteen days – Steve pushes him away. He tells him he doesn’t want to see his face and for Brent not to go to their parents. Brent leaves, heartbroken. Steve reflects on this moment, probably wishing he could take it back.

Edward made a “Shay the Slayer” sticker for Shay’s roller derby helmet but is surprised when she tells him she won’t be taking the place on the team that was offered to her. Xavier has gotten into her head and turned her off roller derby, after all of her practicing. Edward calls her on this and she’s defensive about Xavier, as usual. She tells Edward that Xavier told her Edward has a weird crush on her, and that it’s strange he sleeps on her floor. Edward tells Shay he’s not into her, and it wasn’t weird until Xavier made it weird. Shay’s jealousy comes out when she realizes Edward likes Mahira more than her.

Lacey, John, Linda and Edward have dinner. Everyone wonders how Besa and Xavier can remain friendly after their divorce, to the point of Xavier living with them. Linda asks how Lacey and John met. Lacey says they met at a bar, and John was actually going after Jane, much to Edward’s amusement. John denies it, and Lacey says he thought Jane’s clogs looked cool. The group laugh about the old stories and memories.

Sienna reflects on the people she met at the garage sale as she and Sam fold laundry. Sam is cagey about Vernon, and Sienna asks Sam if he thinks Ben and Vernon were together. Sam shrugs it off, feeling vulnerable. She also says she thought Ben was in love with Sam, the way she saw him looking at him sometimes. Sam acts like she’s talking crazy but tears up when Sienna wonders if Ben ever found love.

Adriana shows Kojo how to make smores, though he is not a fan of American food. Becks encourages him to try it, and he loves it. The three of them make a beautiful little found family, telling stories around the fire. Kojo tells one about a Queen of New York, based on Adriana. Adriana isn’t sure where this story is going, until the Queen falls in love with the King of Porta Potties. He wants Adriana to come home with him to Ghana, even though it would mean leaving behind everything she’s ever known. Becks says the Queen should follow her heart. Adriana says the incredibly handsome King could move to New York, but Kojo says it’s just a fairytale.

Dee Dee sips champagne out of a juice glass, toasting to the heavens and wishes Charles happy anniversary. She is surprised when Zoe comes home. She postponed her trip to be there for her mom, and it turns out she picked out the champagne. It’s nice to see she can think of others and not just herself. The two get champagne flutes and toast happy anniversary. It’s nice Dee Dee didn’t have to go through it alone.

John blindsides Lacey by telling her he thinks he should move out. He then packs some bags and puts them in his truck and drives away as Edward watches from the window above. Mahira then sends Edward a text saying they need to talk and asks to meet him next Sunday at the museum. He hallucinates Jordan talking to him, telling him when a girl says she needs to talk it’s not a good thing. Edward says he loves Mahira because of her connection to Jordan, which is true.

It seems the house will be home to just Lacey, Linda and Edward for now.
