Recap: Dear Edward - Season 1, Episode 9

In the aftermath of last week, Edward sits in the principal’s office after pushing the piano down the stairs. When asked why, he says he wanted to see what he sounded like. The principal is not amused. Edward says he’ll pay for a new one, but the principal says it’s not about that, it’s about the safety of his fellow students. Edward is expelled from Riverview. After expelling him, the principal offers Edward a piece of birthday cake. He accepts, tears rolling down his face – then spots an open window and escapes.

Sienna confronts Ben over his flirty text messages with Vernon. She’s hurt and confused. She asks him about his sexuality, which is probably Sam’s worst nightmare. Sienna has to take their daughter to the dentist, but her fight with Ben is far from over.

Lacey tries to wake Linda up, but Linda is feeling unwell. Unsure if it’s physical or emotional, Lacey tries to talk her into getting up instead of wallowing in bed. Linda just wants to lie in bed and feel like shit and play games on her phone. She catches a break from Lacey’s gentle nagging when a call comes in informing Lacey about what Edward has done.

Adriana hits the streets the day before the election, meeting voters and giving her best pitch. She campaigns on issues that matter the most to her such as housing, affordable rent, the homeless. At home, Kojo and Becks are packed up and ready to head home to Ghana. Becks wants to wait before they leave for the airport as Adriana promised she would come and say goodbye, but Kojo tells her Adriana is very busy. Becks draws Adriana a goodbye picture, and Kojo promises her they will see Adriana again.

Edward walks home after escaping from school. Still angry, he sees the golf putting green he made for Shay in the driveway and drags it back to his house now that the two aren’t hanging out any more. He gets himself some ice cream and plays some piano music, thinking he’s home alone. But he soon hears a noise from Linda’s room – she’s sobbing, clearly in a lot of pain. She takes Edward’s phone and calls 911, as Edward is too freaked out to do it himself.

Linda and Edward take a bumpy ambulance ride to the hospital, and it gives him flashbacks to the bumpy plane ride. His family. Playing games with Jordan on the flight. Holding hands as the plane went down. Meanwhile, Lacey arrives at school and the principal catches her up on the events of the day. She is not thrilled to find out Edward shoved a piano down the stairs and jumped out a window. The hospital calls Lacey on Edward’s phone and tells her Linda is in the hospital. Edward sits alone in the waiting room.

Dee Dee goes to see Milo at his office. Interestingly, he has a piano in his office. He’s an official therapist, not just a random guy who manages grief group. Dee Dee suggests that they have a party for the final session of grief group. Snacks, punch, cupcakes. Milo is hesitant at first, especially when Dee Dee wants money for the food. But he relents and gives her $40. She tells him the group experience has been very helpful for her, and thanks him. She asks why it has to end, as the group gives her comfort. The airline won’t pay for any more sessions, which “fucking sucks” according to Milo.

Sienna returns home to continue confronting Sam over his relationship with Vernon. She asks the two ever had sex, but Sam says no. She asks about Ben, knowing the two had feelings for each other too. But he says no, Ben was the first person that he ever loved – but nothing much ever really happened. They flirted, kissed a couple of times. But that was all. Sienna feels betrayed as Sam didn’t tell her about this side of his sexuality before.

Lacey and Edward continue to wait for news on Lacey and while they do, she questions Edward about the piano. She asks him why he did it, and he gives the same answer he gave the principal: He wanted to hear what it sounded like. Lacey asks for a better reason, but Edward truly doesn’t know. It became an outlet for his anger. He worries Linda and her baby might die, and they’ll lose more people from their lives. She summons John to come and pick Edward up so he can have some dinner, and tells Edward everything is going to be okay.

Adriana sprints home, hoping to catch Kojo and Becks before they leave for the airport – but they’re already gone. She’s too late. She finds the picture Becks left for her with a little goodbye message and tears up. Kojo and Becks meant far more to her than she thought. As she sees their belongings gone and the house empty once more, she realizes she needs to see them one last time.

Amanda and Steve decide to make the soup dumplings that Brent had made, in at attempt at healing. He knows it probably won’t make him feel better, but he wants to try. Dee Dee calls him and tells him of her plans for a party for the last session of grief group, and wants something that reflects the cultural diversity of the group – so Steve promises to bring the soup dumplings. Once he’s off the phone, Amanda looks at him – really looks at him – and asks him why here’s there. The two end up kissing again.

John and Edward head home from the hospital. He’s unbothered that Edward shoved the piano down the stairs and says he did way stupider things as a kid. John tells Edward he was 15 when his parents split up. He used to smash lightbulbs as a way of working out his anger. Breaking things is cathartic, and Edward relates to that. He thinks he was supposed to die on the plane, as Jordan was meant to have the window seat – but Edward wanted it and got it instead. He still feels guilt over this choice. John’s bachelor pad is… not the fanciest place. But some peace and quiet is probably just what Edward needs now.

Dee Dee surprises Zoe at her dorm as Zoe has been ignoring her texts. Zoe is not happy to see her as she feels embarrassed in front of her roommates. Dee Dee apologizes to her spoiled child for failing her as a mother, but Dee Dee didn’t fail her. She always did what was best for Zoe. Dee Dee says Charles failed them too, and tells Zoe about Charles’ life in Los Angeles. Dee Dee tells her about the grief group party tomorrow, and that they’ve helped her work through life without Charles. Dee Dee finishes her speech and leaves Zoe to process the new information.

The doctors finally give Lacey an update on Linda – her baby came early! Lacey watches on as Linda meets her baby for the first time, and Lacey cries as she will never get to experience this for herself. The baby is tiny and fragile, but alive.

Sienna returns home after taking some time to think. She still loves Sam, and doesn’t want to lose him. But she needs to know he’s 100% in. She doesn’t want an open marriage, or to be worrying about Sam cheating on her and keeping secrets. She tells him he needs to decide what his life will be.

Kojo and Becks go through airport security in preparation for their flight home to Ghana, but are suddenly pulled aside. They are pleasantly surprised to be taken to a room to see Adriana, who couldn’t let them leave without saying goodbye in person. Kojo asks if this is the part of the movie where she stops him at the gates, declares her love and asks him to stay, or get on the flight together and live happily ever after in Ghana. But the election is tomorrow.

Kojo tells her about his home in Ghana, and his family who live there. It’s beautiful. Adriana tells Kojo she loves him, and the two kiss. The little family of three hug. But it’s time for Kojo and Becks to board their place, and Adriana stays behind.

While looking about John’s place, Edward finds the box of envelopes Lacey and John hid from him and starts going through them. Letters from people who had family members on the same flight. From other kids who share their sympathies. From a few religious people. A couple of crazy people. Eventually, he finds Mahira’s letter. It all gets a bit too much to process in the dark.
