Recap: The Mandalorian - Season 3, Episode 5

This week on The Mandalorian: High Magistrate Greef Karga's planet Nevarro is a thriving trade hub that continues to expand. While discussing plans to further improve the planet's conditions, a disturbance interrupts Karga's conversation. Rushing to his balcony, Karga discovers his citizens in chaos as a colossal pirate Corsair swoops in, announcing the arrival of Pirate King Gorian Shard. The Pirate King accuses Karga of shooting down his men in the previous season and declares retaliation. Karga reminds Shard that Nevarro is protected by the New Republic, but Shard refuses to acknowledge the planet's affiliation and starts attacking the citizens. Karga rejects the idea of fleeing and instead sends a plea for help to the New Republic soldiers stationed on a nearby island. Captain Carson Teva, known for aiding Mando in a past episode, receives Karga's message and decides to assist the magistrate. Karga requests the New Republic to intervene before the planet falls to Shard's control and transforms into a pirate base. After discovering that Coruscant is unable to respond for weeks, Teva decides to travel there himself.

After reaching Coruscant, Teva enters the New Republic headquarters and requests to meet Captain Tuttle. Elia Kane shows an interest in Teva as he introduces himself and hands Tuttle Karga's hologram message requesting help. Officer G68 arrives at the office and Tuttle asks if she knows about Nevarro. She confirms that she has spent some time on the planet and reveals that it has not signed the charter with the New Republic and remains independent. Tuttle explains that there are member planets with higher priority for aid, but Teva argues that Nevarro is facing Stormtroopers and TIE fighters, and there are rumors of Moff Gideon's takeover. Teva accuses G68 of thinking like an Imperial, leading to a heated exchange. Teva realizes that Coruscant cannot offer help and decides to explore other options.

Karga and the citizens of Nevarro reach the Lava Flats where he assures them that he has requested help, and it will arrive soon. Meanwhile, Teva searches the familiar rocky terrain and spots Bo-Katan's ship. He descends near the cave where the Children of the Watch reside, and they aim their blasters at him. Teva requests an urgent audience with them, and Paz Vizsla, followed by Mando and the others, steps out. Vizsla suggests killing Teva to keep their location a secret, but Mando intervenes, reminding them that Teva had helped him in the past, and he owes him a favor. Teva hands them Karga's hologram message and privately tells Mando that he wanted him to know about Karga's trouble, as the New Republic needs to be aware of the Empire's activities.

Following Teva's departure, Mando addresses the Mandalorians, asking for their aid. He admits that Karga was their adversary in the past, but he has since changed and offered Mando a plot of land on Nevarro for the Mandalorians to settle on. Mando argues that their children should be able to enjoy the outdoors and play under the sun. Paz Vizsla also stands up, reminding the group of the sacrifices they made to save Mando and Grogu. He asks why they should suffer again for Mando's sake, but answers his own question, saying they belong to the Mandalorian tribe. Vizsla mentions how Mando saved his son and how Bo-Katan never gave up on Grogu, even when his father did. Therefore, he and the other Mandalorians agree to help Mando and Bo-Katan. The Armorer affirms their decision, stating "This is the Way."

Bo-Katan devises a plan of attack where she and Mando will provide aerial distractions while the other Mandalorians arrive via Bo's Kom'rk transporter ship to form a cohesive unit on the ground. During their journey to Nevarro, Bo-Katan explains that it is time for Mandalorians to live with dignity on the planet where they once had to hide in sewers. The planet is currently under the control of pirates who have taken over major areas and are mistreating the citizens who were unable to flee. When the pirate king's ship, Gorian's Corsair, is attacked by Mando's N-1, he orders snub fighters to pursue and eliminate the attacker. As the pirates chase Mando, he manages to take out several of their ships and Karga expresses his gratitude. Mando agrees to take up Karga's offer of land and continues to distract the pirates while the Kom'rk drops off the Mandalorians on the ground. The Mandalorians engage in battle with the pirates, quickly eliminating them. Meanwhile, using the distraction, Bo-Katan targets the Corsair's engine with her Kom'rk, causing Gorian to order Vane and the remaining snub fighters to retreat.

The initial Mandalorian team finds themselves trapped between two groups of pirates who relentlessly fire at them, resulting in several injuries. The situation seems bleak until Paz Vizsla and his heavy blaster arrive with the second group. The repeating weapon quickly takes out the pirates, but their triumph is short-lived as another group emerges with a large gun from Karga's offices. The Mandalorians take cover from the potent weapon, and even Vizsla is knocked to the ground. Suddenly, the Armorer charges into the room with her hammer and begins attacking the pirates, flinging the one manning the cannon off the balcony.

Meanwhile, Mando and Bo-Katan work together to destroy several snub-fighters, causing another Corsair engine to fail as a result of the collision. The fleeing pirates are ultimately cornered by Karga, citizens, and Vizsla's forces. The pirates surrender, and Vane abandons the pirate king as he realizes his impending defeat. In a fit of rage, the pirate king targets the citizens by blasting the Lava Flats. However, Mando and Bo-Katan aim their fire at the last remaining engine of the Corsair, causing it to crash, with Gorian aboard, and Nevarro is freed.

Karga expresses gratitude to the Mandalorians for their heroic actions in rescuing Nevarro from the pirates' grip. He admits that despite their past conflicts, it's time to move forward and offers them land on the planet as a reward. Vizsla informs Bo-Katan that the Armorer wishes to speak with her. Upon arriving at the underground location, Bo-Katan finds the Armorer examining the forge that was used to create all the Mandalorian armor in season one of "The Mandalorian." The Armorer discusses the differences between the forges on Mandalore and Nevarro and how they both serve the same purpose. She then asks Bo-Katan to remove her helmet, which she hesitates to do, but eventually does so at the Armorer's request. The Armorer assigns Bo-Katan the task of bringing back the Mandalorians who have strayed from the Way, and she also reveals that the appearance of the mythical creature Mythosaur to Bo-Katan signifies a new era for the Mandalorians. The Armorer asks Bo-Katan to unite all the Mandalorian tribes, as she has experience in both worlds, and Bo-Katan accepts the challenge. As Bo-Katan emerges from the underground location, everyone is staring at her since she has removed her helmet. The Armorer proclaims that Bo-Katan should lead the unification of all the Mandalorian tribes, given her experience on both sides and that now is the time to reclaim their home planet of Mandalore.

During his space patrol, Captain Carson Teva comes across a Lambda shuttle in ruins with a breached hull that suggests it was attacked. He contacts Lieutenant Reed to learn that a similar shuttle had disappeared in the same area, but with classified details. Teva sends his R7 droid to launch a probe inside the damaged shuttle, revealing ruins and flight logs indicating that it was a New Republic prison transport ship. Upon discovering a hand belonging to one of the deceased inside the ship, he requests the departure times and is shocked to learn that this was the same ship that held Moff Gideon. This confirms rumors that the Moff was broken out of the ship while others perished. Although Teva does not find any survivors, he does locate a shard of pure Beskar alloy, leading him to suspect the Mandalorians' involvement. The Captain questions whether the Mandalorians played a role in breaking Moff Gideon out of the ship and ponders what this could mean for the Children of the Watch.
