Review: Succession - Season 4, Episode 1

As Succession enters its fourth and final season, Episode 1 sets the stage for the ultimate question: who will ultimately take over the family business from Logan Roy and how will they accomplish it? The episode introduces the notion that Kendall, Shiv, and Roman may opt for their own paths rather than following in their father's footsteps. However, it remains uncertain if this is truly satisfactory for them.

While brainstorming for their latest venture "The Hundred," the group humorously questions whether their idea is too groundbreaking, given that no one else has thought of it before. However, their lackluster logo and confusion about the project's concept suggest that they may not have a clear idea of what they are trying to achieve. It is a sad reflection of their upbringing that they feel they would be nothing without their father's influence, despite their flashes of brilliance. Roman appears to be the most invested in the project, possibly due to his dedication to it.

Despite their current struggles, it's important to remember that the characters in Succession weren't always in this position. Shiv, for instance, had a successful career as a political strategist, while Kendall was a competent member of Waystar Royco with Logan's full support - or so he thought. Roman, on the other hand, had a reputation for being a renegade party boy, but he excelled in this role, building valuable connections and becoming fully invested in their latest venture.

However, Roman's lack of investment in the family business is apparent, as he previously trained at the bottom of the company and worked in the amusement park business. It's clear that he does not have the same desire to continue the family legacy as his siblings.

Despite their past successes, it seems unlikely that their latest venture, The Hundred, will be successful given their current situation. However, if they acquire Pierce Global Media, they will start with an established empire rather than having to build one from the ground up.

It's no surprise then that the battle for dominance begins during Logan's birthday party, just three days before the Waystar Royco sale, which will ultimately shift the power balance.

Logan's inner circle now consists of people like Connor, Tom, Greg, and Kerry, who are all vying for his attention and favor, but none of them yearn for his affection and approval as much as Kendall, Shiv, Roman, or maybe even Gerri.

However, the bond between Tom and Greg, who have evolved their bizarre friendship into something only they can appreciate, is still going strong, and they have even christened themselves as the Disgusting Brothers. Shiv had heard rumors of this, but it was on display for all to see at the birthday celebration.

Despite their often despicable behavior, there is an authenticity to the Roys' emotions that evokes both sympathy for their sadness and frustration with their arrogant entitlement.

One of the most poignant scenes in the show's history occurred when Tom and Shiv finally shared a moment on screen. Despite a deep love between them, their fear of emotional vulnerability causes them to lash out at one another. When they do connect, however, it's a heart-wrenching display. As their marriage crumbles, they reach for each other's hands, tears in their eyes, and it's an unforgettable moment of Succession's greatness. As we approach the final season, I can't help but hope that this broken and isolated family finds comfort and healing with one another before it's too late.
