Recap: Succession - Season 4, Episode 3

The episode that aired on Sunday was expected to revolve around Connor and Willa's wedding.. but wedding episodes on HBO are never what they seem!

Roman heads to the wedding but receives a call from Logan, who is boarding a plane with Tom to meet Matsson. Logan wants Roman to deliver the bad news of firing Gerri, which is clearly a loyalty test. Despite his apprehension, Roman agrees to do it. At the wedding, a brass band plays as Willa explains to her mother that they will travel by boat to Ellis Island for the ceremony, fulfilling Connor's desire for a grand celebration. However, Connor becomes irritated when he overhears guests criticizing the wealthy. Meanwhile, Roman musters up the courage to pull Gerri aside.

Gerri immediately picks up on the fact that something is amiss when Roman approaches her in an uncharacteristically awkward manner. He is not discussing crude topics, and after hesitating for a moment, he abruptly informs her that she is being terminated. Logan blames Gerri for their recent troubles with the Department of Justice and the hefty fine they were forced to pay. However, Gerri argues that she worked tirelessly for him. Roman attempts to console her by stating that she will be generously compensated and expressing remorse for the situation. Gerri is furious and storms off, leaving Roman to question his father's behavior in a voicemail he probably never heard.

Kendall arrives while Connor is complaining about the subpar wedding cake, which reminds him of the "loony cake" his mother received when she was institutionalized. Shiv ignores Tom's repeated phone calls. Connor is still hopeful that Logan will attend the wedding, unaware that he is en route overseas. Kendall and Roman suggest that Shiv inform Logan of Gerri's firing, but Tom contacts Roman during the flight, informing him that something is wrong with Logan. Logan was found unresponsive in the bathroom, and the flight crew is attempting to revive him with chest compressions. Frank holds Logan's phone to his ear so Kendall and Roman can speak to their father "in case it's their last chance." A stunned Roman tells Logan, "You are a monster. You will prevail," and Kendall chokes out, "I love you. I do... I cannot forgive you, but it's okay, and I love you." Kendall runs to Shiv to relay the news, and she frantically tells Logan, "I love you... don't leave, not now." Tom informs her that Logan's heart and breathing have ceased, and he is not okay.

Kendall demands that Logan’s doctor and the best heart specialist in the world be contacted immediately and brought to the plane. He also wants to speak with the pilot, but Frank gently reminds him that the pilot is busy flying the plane. When Kendall asks if Logan is dead, Frank is unsure, but thinks he might be. Kendall becomes emotional and hangs up the phone. Shiv is upset that she wasn’t informed sooner, and Roman is disoriented and unable to recall what he said to Logan. They realize they must inform Connor, but he is cold and unwilling to handle the news at the moment. Roman is still holding out hope that Logan may not be dead and wants to bring in proper doctors.

Karolina begins to prepare for the worst, and Tom tells Greg to leave the wedding and come to the office because Logan has died. They must keep this information quiet to avoid Waystar's stock from plummeting. Hugo offers condolences, and Roman continues to deny that Logan is dead, suggesting it may be a test. While the lawyers begin to draft a statement, the Roy siblings argue about whether to circle the plane or land immediately, with Kendall emphasizing the significance of their actions on the day their father died.

Connor and Willa discuss the possibility of postponing their wedding, but Connor worries that it may give Willa a chance to reconsider their relationship. He feels old and burdened after his father's death, while she is young and lively. Connor directly asks Willa if she is only with him for his wealth, and she acknowledges that financial security is a factor but asserts that she is genuinely happy with him. She promises not to leave him, at least not on that day. Meanwhile, Kendall, Roman, and Shiv discuss the funeral arrangements and the potential sale of GoJo. They debate whether to proceed with the sale or keep their options open, and they agree to draft the company statement themselves and maintain control until the board convenes. Kendall and Shiv look to Roman to inform Matsson about their father's passing, as he is the sibling who has spoken to Matsson the most.

The trio board a helicopter and head towards the airport where Logan's plane is landing and a press conference awaits. Roman inquires if they'll be alright, and Kendall assures him they will be, before they quip that they are actually doomed. Shiv takes the lead in addressing the press, revealing that Logan passed away upon arrival and paying her respects to him. She also mentions that the board will gather to decide on the next course of action, and when a reporter questions their role, Shiv declares, "We plan to be there." With Waystar's share price plummeting, Kendall, Roman, and Shiv debate whether they should pay their final respects to Logan's body before embracing in a touching three-way hug. Meanwhile, Connor and Willa proceed with their wedding ceremony in front of only a few guests. Shiv and Tom share a ride home, while Kendall remains behind to witness his father's body being loaded into an ambulance.

It will be an intense few episodes moving forward - for the Roy siblings, the Waystar old guard, and the Gojo deal that now hangs in the balance but one thing is for sure: That was one of the best episodes of television I have ever seen.
