Recap: Succession - Season 4, Episode 2

This week on Succession: Shiv convenes with her siblings, Kendall and Roman, at their headquarters and critiques the programming on PGN. She observes that her brothers had little knowledge of what they purchased, which aligns with their typical behavior. While bickering about cable news, Shiv receives an unwelcome phone call informing her that her first choice of divorce lawyer cannot represent her. The lawyer met with Tom, Shiv's soon-to-be-ex-husband, which creates a conflict of interest.

Initially, Shiv shrugs off the setback, but she later discovers that all her preferred lawyers have also met with Tom. Shiv believes that Logan orchestrated this situation, just as he did with her mother. Outraged, Shiv contacts Sandy, who has been persuading the siblings to vote against the GoJo sale to compel Logan to increase their profits. Initially disinterested, the siblings require the money from their Waystar shares to purchase Pierce and cannot risk jeopardizing their windfall. However, Shiv's fury towards Logan motivates her to consider undermining the deal to spite him and to mask the overpriced acquisition of Pierce.

In another location, Logan is feeling restless and unfulfilled due to his inability to mistreat his children. He decides to pay a visit to the ATN newsroom, the one part of his empire where everyone still fears him. Once there, he paces around anxiously, which Greg humorously describes to Tom as "terrifyingly moseying," adding that it's like the movie Jaws, but with everyone working for the shark. In his search for something to occupy himself, Logan delivers a scary-passionate speech to the ATN staff, mixing his usual scathing insults with motivational pep talks.

While at the newsroom, Logan informs Tom of a new issue: Kerry has submitted an audition tape for an anchor position. At first, it appears that Logan may want Tom to hire her. However, it becomes clear that Logan is aware of her lack of talent and has passed the decision on to Tom to reject her. Predictably, Tom opts to delegate the task to Greg, claiming that it is a diplomatic assignment. This decision perfectly illustrates Tom's character: he would rather have a difficult task performed poorly than take responsibility for it himself.

Greg tries his best to reject Kerry, who is aware of the Roy family's tradition of conveying bad news through Greg. Greg attributes the rejection to a vague "focus group," as per Tom's advice, but crumbles under Kerry's interrogation, and she detects the truth: "If this focus group is fake," she warns him, "I'm going to tear you apart like a string cheese."

Shiv subtly pushes her brothers to consider Sandy's proposal to sabotage the sale, without revealing her true motive of wanting to spite Logan. Roman declines, as he no longer wants to be in conflict with their father, while Kendall thinks it's pointless since Matsson will simply walk away, leaving no more profits to be gained. However, their plans to attend Connor's rehearsal dinner are ruined when Logan revokes their access to the Waystar helicopter, forcing them to drive like commoners. They arrive extremely late and encounter Willa, who appears uncertain and quickly leaves. Upstairs, they find Connor, who informs them that Willa is having second thoughts.

Surprisingly, Kendall and Roman express genuine sympathy towards Connor as he contemplates the possibility of his wedding being called off. Although they decline his invitation to sing karaoke, they agree to join him for a drink to alleviate his worries. However, their attention quickly shifts to the impending board meeting and the decision regarding whether or not to impede the GoJo deal. During the gathering, Kendall receives a call from Matsson, who warns him not to attempt to demand more money, threatening to abandon the deal if Kendall does so. Although Kendall has been advocating for this position, he begins to reconsider after receiving the call. Perhaps it is because he believes Matsson is showing signs of panic, which suggests the opportunity for more profit, or perhaps it is because he is tired of being pushed around. Regardless of his reasoning, Kendall contemplates voting against the deal.

Kendall, Shiv, and Roman eventually concede to Connor's request and end up in a tacky private room in a karaoke bar. Despite being there to have fun, Connor decides to sing karaoke to mimic what he has seen in movies. He chooses to sing Leonard Cohen's melancholic "Famous Blue Raincoat," which might be one of the most depressing rounds of karaoke I've seen.

Even in the karaoke room, discussions about the deal persist. Roman refuses to be part of Kendall and Shiv's plans with Sandy and Stewy. Connor, although not a board member, is outraged that his siblings want to prevent him from receiving his share of the money. He is so incensed that he sends a text message to Logan, which results in the unlikely sight of Logan visiting a karaoke bar to plead with his children to cooperate.

Logan's approach is surprisingly cordial as he informs his children that there is no more money to be had and that the deal will fail if they vote against it. Despite his usual demeanor, he attempts to make a personal appeal to his children's emotions, but only apologizes for revoking their access to the helicopter. However, Shiv confronts him about the advice he gave Tom during their divorce, and Logan responds by stating that he would have given her the same advice if she had asked. Unfortunately, this response does not satisfy Shiv's expectations of her father.

Kerry accompanies Logan, which indicates that he is not willing to engage in deep emotions. Nevertheless, the siblings notice a fleeting expression of disappointment on Kerry's face, and they use this opportunity to warn her that being let down by Logan is her future. Logan becomes irritated and tells his children that they are not serious people, which prompts him to leave abruptly.

Shiv heads home, contemplating calling Tom. Kendall heads home, feeling satisfied after outmaneuvering his father. For Kendall, the insults hurled at him by Logan no longer have any impact - winning is all that matters. Connor heads home to find Willa in bed, ready to comfort him on the eve of their wedding. Though he may feel left out by his siblings, he is comforted by the fact that he has someone to cuddle with.

However, Roman does not go home. He goes to visit Logan, desperate to salvage their relationship. Logan proposes an offer to Roman: he wants him to take over at ATN. Logan plans to remove Syd from her position and replace her with Roman. He cancels the board meeting and wants Roman to accompany him to meet with Mr. GoJo in person. "Do you really want me at ATN?" Roman asks. "More, Romulus. I need you," Logan replies. Time and time again Roman goes back to his father, desperate for his approval.

Next week everyone will meet to attend Connor's wedding - if Willa doesn't become a runaway bride in the process.
