Recap: Silo - Season 1, Episode 4

In Silo Episode 4, Juliette is summoned to the Mayor's office regarding Ruth's death. Deputy Marnes suspects rat poison as the cause and believes he was the intended target. However, it turns out Ruth was not the intended victim, leaving Marnes devastated.

Bernard assumes the role of interim mayor and appoints Juliette as the Sheriff. She is escorted to the Sheriff's office where she encounters resistance from her assistant, Sandy, who holds prejudices against those from the lower levels. Despite the challenges, Juliette stands her ground and requests access to files and the gun cabinet. Sandy hesitates, insisting on official swearing-in before granting access. Juliette compromises, emphasizing her need for just one file—the George Wilkins file.

Juliette asserts her authority and reminds Sandy that she holds the position of power, demanding Wilkin's file. However, her determination doesn't prevent her from exploring on her own. Her search leads her to "Holding 3," a notorious area that leads to the surface.

Interwoven in the story are flashbacks that reveal more about Juliette's past with her father. Her brother, Jacob, is shown in a deteriorating state, and it becomes apparent that he did not survive, along with their mother. Feeling alone, Juliette visits the recycling area and disposes of many belongings from her apartment, although she is encouraged to keep Jacob's favorite toy by a friendly man.

Juliette has always had a knack for fixing things, but while repairing a chair, her attempt to cook triggers the alarm system. When her father returns, she blames him for the situation, resulting in a disagreement. He tells her, "Not everything can be fixed."

Juliette descends to the "bottom 50 levels" where she learns her trade alongside Martha and others. Part of her duties involves recycling sorting and hard, extensive work for the betterment of the Silo. Although Juliette's forged letter implicates her father, he allows her to stay as long as she is happy.

Returning to the present, Bernard officially swears in Juliette as the Sheriff before she returns to her office. Shortly after, Sandy informs her that there is no George Wilkins file. However, Holston left behind a file for the new sheriff, containing a handwritten note and a cryptic clue. Before Juliette can investigate further, Deputy Marnes finds himself in a troublesome situation in the market, as he aggressively confronts Frankie, whom he believes is the poisoner.

A year ago, Frankie had poisoned two levels using rat poison. Frustrated by the lack of seriousness given to Ruth's murder, Deputy Marnes becomes someone Juliette can confide in. She shares the details of her conversation with Holston regarding George's murder and the instruction to await a sign. Juliette believes the sign is the sheriff badge with the word "truth." In exchange for Marnes' assistance in uncovering Ruth's killer, Juliette seeks his help in finding George's murderer. The pair reluctantly reach a tentative agreement.

Juliette's experience in the recycling area allows her to establish a closer bond with the people there, surpassing what Marnes or even Holston could achieve. Meanwhile, Marnes resorts to setting up a punching bag in his apartment to release his anger.

In Martha's lab, she successfully repairs the camcorder that Juliette had been tinkering with in the previous episode. However, the outcome of this is not shown. Instead, the scene shifts back to Juliette in her office, where she decides to investigate the rattling in the vents. Earlier, Bernard had mentioned this issue, and it turns out to be a good thing that Juliette didn't agree to have someone else check it. When she investigates on her own, she discovers a crucial clue hanging in the vents—a rattling chain connected to a bag filled with papers. It's the George Wilkins file.

As the episode comes to a close, the focus shifts once again to Deputy Marnes. It's after-hours and he's intoxicated. There's a suggestion that he might drop his bottle off the edge of the Silo into the depths below, but he reconsiders. Instead, he returns to his apartment. However, while there, he is suddenly attacked by an unknown individual who holds him at gunpoint.
