Embracing the allure of a captivating costume drama is a testament to their enduring appeal, as seen in the immense popularity of Netflix's Bridgerton series. Timeless love stories have captivated audiences for generations, which makes the adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel "The Buccaneers" a natural choice.
The AppleTV+ series faithfully incorporates key elements like rich set designs and meticulously crafted costumes that reflect the unique traits of each character. Each of the women has their own unique perspective and charm. The first three episodes introduce us to their world of drama and romance.
Nan (Kristine Froseth) takes center stage as the heroine, often found climbing out windows and running through fields. She provides a light narration for the series, especially in the beginning, where she reflects on how she was never expected to be the focal point of the story. However, her words unmistakably proclaim her as the protagonist. She is joined by her sister Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) and a spirited group of friends led by the lively Conchita (Alisha Boe), all of whom defy the conventions imposed on young women by society.
Set in the 1870s, the story follows these young American women as they are sent to London with the aim of securing husbands and titles. Along the way, they encounter resistance from those who adhere strictly to tradition, as well as a clash of cultures as they seek love and embrace the freedom of youth.
In the universe of The Buccaneers, individuals strive for matches that are at least somewhat bearable; marriage is viewed more as a means to an end rather than the pinnacle of an exhilarating and romantic courtship. For certain characters, even the everyday aspects of married life are burdened by issues like secret affairs, children born out of wedlock, and instances of domestic abuse that initially remain hidden behind closed doors before becoming more publicly known. It might seem like a substantial amount to introduce right at the outset, particularly when some of the most impactful moments are the most subdued, like a warm exchange and the blossoming of a relationship by the seashore.
Not even the older generation is exempt from these challenges; Nan and Jinny's mother (Christina Hendricks) grapples with turmoil in her own marriage, all while hoping for a brighter future for her daughters. The opulence and allure of the Gilded Age are marred by the weightier emotional undertones of the series' major plotlines, with only a few offering a glimmer of hope for resolution.
Whether or not all of the women will find happy matches or not remains to be seen, but at least they will get to have some fun along the way.
The Buccaneers is now available on AppleTV+ with new episodes each Wednesday.
