Review: Acapulco - Season 3

In the opening moments of Season 3 of Acapulco, Maximo Gallardo, now a billionaire, fills in his nephew Hugo on the events of Season 2. He recounts his experiences at the Las Calinas resort in Acapulco back in 1985, from his humble beginnings as a pool boy to his rise as a captivating entertainer. The recap highlights the highs and lows, from romance and friendship to challenges and triumphs. As Maximo and Hugo approach the door, they're met by a woman who affectionately refers to Maximo as "Dad," leaving both of them shocked and intrigued about what lies ahead.

The woman, revealed to be Paloma (Vico Escorcia), resides in an Acapulco house funded by Maximo for some time. However, her demeanor towards him at the door suggests a strained relationship between them. Hugo, surprised by the existence of his cousin Paloma, realizes she's never been mentioned before. Maximo confesses to Paloma his hesitation in meeting her, and she reluctantly invites him and Hugo inside. As they enter, Maximo begins recounting the next chapter, detailing the early stages of his relationship with Julia (Camila Perez).

A younger Maximo (Enrique Arrizon) is on the brink of assuming his new role as Assistant Head of Operations, working under his idol Don Pablo (Damián Alcázar). His promotion is celebrated by everyone, including his best friend Memo (Fernando Carsa), who has been promoted to head pool boy. Julia even crafted a new uniform shirt for Maximo. Despite their openness with Maximo's family, Julia insists on keeping their relationship discreet at Las Calinas.

All is well at the resort for a short time with Maximo enjoying his new role. However, a complication arises when Alejandro Vera, the brother of one of the resort's co-owners, arrives to assess potential enhancements to his brother's investment. Upon encountering Maximo, whom he remembers as "the ceviche guy," Alejandro suggests a ceviche tasting at the same scenic spot—coinciding with Memo's planned proposal.

Meanwhile, at home, Maximo's mother, Nora, adjusts to the presence of her new husband, Esteban. While she appreciates his helpfulness and domestic skills, Nora finds herself with little to do around the house, a situation that unsettles her. Throughout the season everyone has their own journeys, which are hilarious, heartwarming and sometimes sad to watch. Acapulco is a rare gem of a comedy, and I look forward to seeing season 4!

The first two episodes of Season 3 premiere Wednesday, May 1, on Apple TV+.
