The Perfect Couple centers on Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson), a zoologist engaged to marry into the prestigious Winbury family. However, the joy of her and Benji's (Billy Howle) rehearsal dinner turns into a murder investigation when a body is found on the Winbury estate the following morning. As the investigation unfolds, long-hidden secrets about the Winbury family emerge in increasingly outrageous fashion, setting the stage for a delightfully melodramatic and entertaining series.
The story begins on Nantucket Island during Fourth of July weekend. We meet the guests while they revel in the pre-wedding celebrations under a grand tent on the Winburys' beachfront property. While Amelia’s parents and her best friend and maid of honor, Merritt (Meghann Fahy), are present, the event is primarily a Winbury event. Amelia’s fiancé, Benji, is thoughtful and kind, but his wealthy family is another matter. Benji’s older brother, Tom (Jack Reynor), is a brash character kept in check only by his scheming wife, Abby (Dakota Fanning).
Meanwhile, the youngest Winbury, Will (Sam Nivola), seems lost and struggling to find his place in the family. The Winbury patriarch, Tag (Liev Schreiber) is only interested in smoking weed. At the top of this complex family dynamic is matriarch Greer (Nicole Kidman), an acclaimed novelist who maintains control over her dynasty with a calculating demeanor.
The Winburys' loyal housekeeper, Gosia (Irina Dubova), is very wary of anyone who hasn't either been born into or worked for the family for a long time and greatly admires Greer’s firm control over everyone. Her interviews with the police intersect with the main action, offering additional insights into the key characters, much like the witness and suspect interviews in Big Little Lies. The approach proves to be equally effective.
The situation takes a grave turn in the early hours of the next morning. Nantucket Chief of Police Dan Carter (Michael Beach) receives a call about a body discovered in the water. Familiar with the Winburys' influence, Chief Carter initially aims to close the investigation quickly. However, he is forced to face the reality when Detective Nikki Henry (Donna Lynne Champlin) is brought in from the mainland to handle the case. As they delve deeper, they uncover that the Winburys' seemingly perfect exterior hides much, much more than they initially thought.
