Review: Shrinking - Season 2

Jimmy (Jason Segel) is a therapist in LA who was really messed up by the sudden death of his wife. Normally, therapists just sit back, throw out some dry comments, and ask questions until the session ends, right? But not Jimmy—he gets involved, speaks his mind, and gives real advice. In the first season, he let Sean (Luke Tennie), a veteran with PTSD, crash at his place. Now, in season two, he’s visiting Grace (Heidi Gardner) in jail because she took his suggestion of pushing her abusive husband off a cliff a bit too literally.

We get to see more of Paul (Harrison Ford) and his wonderful girlfriend Julie (Wendie Malick), and Gaby (Jessica Williams) Jimmy's friends-with-benefits who is also his co-worker. The neighbors, Liz (Christa Miller) and Derek (Ted McGinley), also get more screen time which I'm really happy about as this show definitely needed more Liz. She's is a tough but fragile straight shooter, and this season throws up some challenges between Liz and her usually laid-back husband Derek.

Meanwhile, the drunk driver, Louis, who caused Jimmy’s wife’s death has come forward, wanting to talk to the family and make amends. Louis is played by Brett Goldstein. His arc is great to watch as we see so much depth and growth in Alice especially, as she struggles with her emotions of anger, grief and finally, forgiveness.

The supporting cast shines this season as Jimmy’s best buddy, Brian (Michael Urie), freaks out about the idea of becoming a parent when his husband, Charlie (Devin Kawaoka), suggests adopting a baby. Gaby gets into it with her sister (Courtney Taylor) about how to care for their aging mom (Vernee Watson), who’s struggling with her eyesight. Alice makes a bad decision that really upsets her best friend, Summer (Rachel Stubington, who’s great in this role). And Sean is totally lost when it comes to dealing with his long-buried resentment toward his dad (Kenajuan Bentley) after they unexpectedly reconnect.

Shrinking is a beautiful comedy which blends humor and poignant moments, showcasing how Jimmy's unconventional approach impacts both his clients and his own journey through life. With its witty writing and strong character development, Shrinking offers a fresh take on the therapist-client dynamic while exploring themes of loss, friendship, and healing.
